Kid's Educational Software

1. ABC Kids Genius

ABC Kid Genius - This is an educational tool to teach
children between the ages of one and four the alphabet,
numbers, reading, and spelling, using the keyboard
only. It is a multimedia program using sound, pictures,
video clips, and the recognition method to progress
through rotating lessons.

2. Bobby's First Letters

Bobby's First Letters is an educational program for
young children that helps them to develop language and
letter-identification skills. It combines audio and
visual cues to step the user through the various
drills. Audio reinforcement is used for correct and
incorrect responses. The drills come in three modes:
letter sounds, pick the first letter of a word, and
pick a word beginning with a letter. The program is
well done, and the drills are easy for preschool
children to follow without losing interest.

3. 2 Clear

2 Clear? - Try to fit the finicky pieces into the puzzle
board. Like "Tetris", the point of this game is to fit
blocks together to remove them from the board. Only,
the dropping blocks have stopped, and players have as
long as they want to decide where the next block should
go. The instructions sound easy, but the colors have to
match as well as the edges, so things quickly become
more complicated!

In the demo version players can choose between the easy
level (which has a 600 point time limit) or the
standard play (which goes on until players run out of
space).

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

4. 3-D Kid's Dice

3-D Kid's Dice - Kids can play 3-D dice and try to
"Shut the Box"! Roll either one or two dice for a score
that will add up to be the same as the numbers on the
box. For example players can shut the 6 box by rolling
a 4 and 2. Another way to shut the boxes is by actually
shutting the boxes labeled 4 and 2. Roll until you
can't shut the boxes any more. If you are left with the
3 box opens, you get 3 points. Try to win the game by
getting the least number of points.

Ages 4 to 8

5. ABC's

ABCs starts up to a screen with letters and a teddy bear. Clicking on the letters, or typing them on the keyboard, causes the computer to say them out loud and display both the upper and lower case. But that's not all! There is also a colour/shape section, where you click on a color or shape to make it display them. Finally, there is a small coloring program, that lets kids draw lines and change colors on the screen. You can also turn off the exit and menu options, making it harder for kids to exit the program (Ctrl+alt+del and alt+tab are disabled), but the author doesn't recommend leaving children unattended.

Ages 2 to 5

6. ABClassroom

ABCs is a program designed to help children improve computer skills and mouse motor skills. The ABC screen lets them use the keyboard or mouse to activate letters and numbers. On the Shapes and Colors screen, click the shape or color and the display area changes to correspond. The Chalkboard screen lets them select colors and draw on a blackboard. The WAV files can be substituted with your voice to personalize the program.

Ages 2 to 4

7. Acorn Arcade

Listen carefully to the words and sounds, then use Sammy Squirrel's Acorn Launcher to shoot down the matching word or picture! If you get four correct answers, you get to go to the bonus level. The graphics and sounds that come with the game are very nice and compliment the game nicely.

Ages 2 to 6

8. Ad Astra

Offering realistic views of your night sky from any location on any date, Adastra presents an intuitive, toolbar-driven interface for quick manipulation of its real-time sky display. You can control centering, zooming, directional, and panning functions. A single mouse click will bring a comprehensive report on any object visible in the sky. Adastra smoothly animates solar system objects against a stellar backdrop, creates printable finder charts, and searches for constellations, stars, and planets, in either point source, spotlight, or the new photoplate display styles. This is actually a really neat program...Pluto is so far away!

Ages 4 to 8

9. Ali Baba

The game Ali Baba is based on the story of
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Your goal is to find
the hidden treasure in the woods. When you start the
game you will be presented with a 10X10 grid filled
with question marks, each question mark represents an
unexplored part of the woods. Click on a question mark
to reveal a path in the woods and start your search.
Beware of the faces which represents one of the thieves
they will block your path and if you come across a
spider web, right click destroy the web then you can
continue your quest. Once you have located the treasure
you need a clear path to get it out of the woods, so
don't block yourself in!

And although the graphics are not great and with the
simplicity of Ali Baba this game could easily be over
looked. There are three skill levels with various
settings to add variety and longevity to the game, and
the option to add your own graphics to personalize the
game.

Note: Comes with great text file with full instructions
to configure the game.

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

10. Alien Tic-Tac-Toe

Kids can play some one-on-one tic-
tac-toe with some frighteningly funny-looking characters.
Amazingly similar to some famous cartoon-characters,
the brother and sister extraterrestrials have found a
way to work out their differences.

There are almost no options, but this quick download
will move the game from paper to machine- with an easy
installation!

Ages 4 to 8

11. Aunt Gwyn's Prairie Dogs

Aunt Gwyn's Prairie Dogs 1.04 - Learn about the alphabet
by clicking on the dog holes to meet the prairie dogs
of dogtown. Then place the dogs in correct alphabetical
order. This demo version is just one of 48 games for
children that you will find on the full version of the
cd rom.

Preschoolers

12. Adding Machine

Adding Machine is designed for adding up columns of
figures. Unlike a calculator, it retains entered
figures onscreen and allows you to edit them--no more
starting over if you are interrupted or make a mistake.
You can give each line a label, save the list to a
disk, print the list, and copy the total to the Windows
Clipboard.

13. Animated New Testament

Animated New Testament v3.0 - This game helps teach the
books of the King James Bible. A player doesn't need to
have any prior knowledge, however, because two or more
wrong answers will cause the correct one to pop up on
the screen. There are a lot of books to learn, and this game
guides the player through the New Testament.

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

14. Animal Mix Up

Animal Mix-up - See how quickly you can discover all the
matching animals behind the WONKA signs. But pay close
attention! These critters love to hide and change
places.

There are 16 Wonka signs with animals behind them. Match
2 pictures in level 1, a picture and label in level 2,
and pictures again in level 3 (except that they move!).
When each level is complete, read the information on
what the animals have in common - for example they all
hibernate or are from the Australian outback.

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

15. Ant Run Pro

ANT RUN PRO is a fast paced arcade game.
Its goal is to keep an ant running through the ant
tunnels for long enough to acquire points needed to
move up each level. The game starts with a screen full
of ant facts, for example that it has 2 stomachs.

Once the game begins, the ant will emerge from the
starting hole within 8 seconds. It begins racing
through the tunnels. Connect the passageways and keep
one step ahead so that the ant never reaches a dead
end. Ants can go off the side of the board - they come
on again on the opposite side.

The grids turn blank after use. If the ant traverses 8
grids and then goes off the side, the blank grids are
reset, and an anthill appears - for extra points. Use
of the FAST mode also gains extra points. There are
lots of special bonus grids to make the game even more
challenging.

Arcade strategy fun for all!

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

16. Animated Old Testament

Animated Old Testament - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus...
or was it Deuteronomy? Some times it isn't so easy to
keep up with the past few thousand years. And since the
teachings of the Bible are progressive, it may be a
good thing to know the order in which the books were
written. This program can be used at home or to test
Sunday scholars on their knowledge of the Old Testament.

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

17. Aquatar's Fables

Aquatar's Fables - a collection of original stories that end with
a "moral of the story" in the tradition of Aesop. Each
story has a colorful illustration accompanying it. This
version contains 9 stories of the 47 stories available in
the full version.

Age 4 to 8, Age 8 and Up

18. Attrib

Attrib is an educational game that requires children to
use keen observation skills. Faced with an array of
sixteen images, your child is asked to find the image
in question. For example, Attrib may ask for all leafy
flowers that are not on a hill, or for green cars
facing left that have a trailer. Attrib offers reward
sounds (which you can turn off), but it doesn't read
the question. This means an adult or older child must
help out. Still, Attrib is a fun way for children to
learn about differences or similarities, and it should
hone their powers of observation. Although the images
appear to be hand-drawn, there is an ample supply of
both images and questions -- so there are always fresh
things to look for.

19. Baby Mash

BabyMash is a simple but wonderfully useful program that
lets your infant play on your computer keyboard without
endangering your data. Each time your baby hits a key,
a colorful shape appears on the screen accompanied by
one of dozens of sounds. When your little one finally
tires of playing, you type BABYMASH to close the
program. The sounds and shapes play at random, so
BabyMash doesn't go that one step further to allow
young ones to connect a specific key with a sound, but
it will certainly save your sanity when your baby
clamors to work with you at the computer.

20. Baby Toons

BabyToons - Software for Babies and toddlers - BabyToons
is a collection of games designed especially for babies
and toddlers (aged 10 months to 2 1/2 years). Children
meet three colorful characters (Babby, Louie, and Baby
Mooie) and have loads of fun while learning key
concepts such as up/down, happy/sad, colours and shapes,
and more.

21. Banger

Banger is a colourful program
for young children (8 to 24 months) who would like to
use the computer. Each time the child touches or bangs
a key, the background color changes, a sound plays, and
the counting number increases. This will continue
indefinitely or until the parent or child has had
enough. Parents can substitute other sounds by simply
adding .wav files to the program directory. Banger
isn't fancy but provides some fun for tots who want to
play on the computer but aren't ready for traditional
programs.

22. Bangfire for Letters

Bangfire For Letters is an educational arcade-style game
that teaches the alphabet. The game is simple to
understand and play. The main screen consists of a
cityscape with the alphabet lined up underneath it. A
voice tells you which letter to click, and then that
letter falls from the sky for you to shoot down. There
are five different difficulty levels, and you can pause
the game. You can also toggle the speed of the falling
letters, the number of missiles, and the rate of
missile fire. On-line help is provided.

23. Bert's Dinosaurs

Bert's Dinosaurs - Bert's Coloring Programs for Windows,
are enjoyable coloring programs for children of all
ages, but are especially useful for introducing young
children to the computer. Bert's Coloring Programs were
designed by educators to be used by young children with
a minimum of assistance by adults. The Coloring
Programs allow the user to place the various images,
all in four different sizes, on a variety of
backgrounds, and also write about the picture they
created.

24. Blue's ABCs

Blues Clues: Blue's ABCs- Pre-Reading - Help Mr. Salt
and Mrs. Pepper with their grocery shopping. Kids who
play must help Blue pick out which items belong in the
basket. Take a look at the list to see which word is
highlighted, then find the food and add it to the cart.
Kids learn to connect the written words with the
object, which encourages reading skills. Remember to
click on Paprika for a surprise.

Ages 2 to 5

25. Blue's Clues: Art Appreciation

Blue's Clues: Art Appreciation

This latest Blue's Clues game stresses art awareness, imagination, and motor skills. Click your mouse on the various craft items from the left of the canvas they'll stick. Then move them to any spot on the canvas and click your mouse again to set them into place. When you are finished with your work of art, click the Animate button to show it to Blue and see what happens.

Ages 3 to 8

26. Blue's Clues: Blue's Birthday

This visual perception game takes your child into the festive world of Blue's Birthday party. There are three scenes to this party, and each one consists of a different activity. The first scene asks you to assist Blue in setting the birthday table, and find the missing items. The second scene requires you to match the present to the giver. The third scene asks you to use your motor skills to "pin the flag on the mailbox."

27. Blue's Clues: Counting with Cash

It's time to go shopping with Blue, are you ready to spend money? Let's go! You have twelve blue dollars to spend at the store, you can buy a toy car, and sunglasses or anything else you might want! Just click on a blue dollar and feed it to the cash register until you have enough to buy the item you want.

Ages 2 to 8

28. Blue's Clues: Feelings

Blue's Clues: Feelings is a game in which preschoolers
try to match the "Feeling Cards" with the expression
on the faces of the characters. When the game begins,
you are asked to figure out what Blue is feeling. Then
you click on a "Feeling Card" that matches the feeling.
The choices are happy, sad, mad, and scared. When the
correct match is made, you win and Blue dances to the
music. You can also match the feelings of Little Kitten
and Purple Kangaroo.

29. Blue's Clues: Hide-and-seek

Blue's playing hide-and-seek! Can you find her? In this visual perception game for children, you're playing hide-and-seek with the famous dog Blue. In the first scene, Blue's at a concert listening to Lady Bassett sing the blues. But everyone else in the crowd is blue too! If you look closely, you'll see Blue move. When you find her, click on her with your mouse and she'll come right over. In the second scene, Blue's hiding in one of her Halloween costumes. This time, Blue stays still, but if you roll your cursor over the right costume, she'll bark. When you hear Blue bark, click on the costume and she'll come out to play. Each scene repeats several times, with Blue's hiding spot randomly changing.

30. Blue's Clues: Instrument Sound Matching

This latest Blue's Clues game stresses sound recognition. When the game begins, you will see three instruments in a living room. When you hear the sound of one of those instruments, you must click on the instrument that matches the sound. When you choose the correct instrument, you win and Blue dances to a special Blue's Clues musical number. You will hear a different instrument each time you play.

31. Blue's Clues: Jigsaws

Kids can help Blue put together
some jigsaw puzzles - this one will take a little skill.
The pieces can overlap, so you might need to
demonstrate to the child that they can move the unused
pieces over to the side where Blue and friends sit
while solving it. The first puzzle starts out with 4
pieces, the next with 6, and then one with 9 pieces.
If the 9 piece puzzle is too hard, just hit the
[PARENTS] button and then hit PLAY again, and you're
back to 4 pieces. We counted 5 different pictures, so
this program should give repeated play.

Age 2 to 5, Age 4 to 8

32. Blue's Clues: Kaleidoscope Pictures

Blue's Clues: Kaleidoscope Pictures is a game in which
preschoolers try to match the picture in the
kaleidoscope with the corresponding object in the room.
The game begins with Blue looking through a
kaleidoscope at a distorted image of an object in the
room. You must click on the matching object. Once you
have figured out three images, you win the game and
Blue dances to the music. A variety of pictures appear
randomly in the kaleidoscope every time the game is
played.

33. Blue's Clues: Let's Draw!

Blue wants to draw and color pictures of her friends! Use the crayons to help her. This is both a drawing and coloring game. There is both a drawing pad for free drawing and an assortment of Blue's Clues characters for coloring. The game starts with a blank canvas to draw on. Pick a crayon color you would like to use and click on the drawing pad with your mouse to start drawing. To draw a line hold the mouse button down and slowly move it in the direction you want to draw. To erase what you have drawn click ERASE (this will clear the drawing pad). If you would like to color simply click on a character you would like to use. To color use the mouse as you did when drawing.

Ages 2 to 5

34. Blue's Clues: Let's Dreams

Blues Clues: Let's Dream! - Join Blue, Slippery Soap,
and all their friends for a game of thinking and
matching. Someone starts the game by describing a
dream. It's up to players to help figure out which
picture matches that person's dream. Did Paprika grow
up to become a chef, a photographer, or maybe a
musician?

Age 2 to 5, Age 4 to 8

35. Blue's Clues: Lights On, Lights Off

Blue's Clues: Lights On, Lights Off

In subsequent rounds, you must click Slippery when his bubble grows to a size larger than one bubble on the screen, but smaller than another bubble. When you answer correctly, Slippery dances to the music.

Ages 2 to 8

tales with Blue while playing a matching game that
